The Origin Story & Video

How Traditional Handmade Shea Butter is Made

A block of Shea butter begins its life as a pile of nuts collected from the wild shea forests of Northern Ghana. Discover the beautiful process involved in crafting natural, unrefined shea butter which is ready for you to use and enjoy. Traditional methods passed down through generations are used to craft every batch. Indulge in our pure, organic Shea butter full of natural goodness straight from the Ghanaian countryside.

THE ART OF MAKING TRADITIONAL HANDMADE SHEA BUTTER

Creating high-quality Shea Butter from Shea kernel is truly an art of flawless skilfulness. Founded on age-old techniques passed down through generations, we have closely collaborated with the communities that produce our Shea butter to help them integrate a modern approach. We enhance quality and hygiene standards in their natural processes, without disrupting their artistry and traditions.

Step 1: The Shea Tree

Shea trees grow wild in Northern Ghana and cover vast areas of the Savannah. Sometimes a single Shea tree can take up to fifty years before it is mature enough to be harvested, making them a precious resource.

Step 2: The Shea Fruit

Harvested between June and August, Shea fruit resemble green plums with round, elongated, or torpedo-like shapes. They are delicious with a seed that can be processed into Shea butter. In season, children line the roads of Ghana to sell the Shea fruit they have collected.

Step 3: Picking and Preparing

Fruit that falls from the trees is picked, cleaned, washed, dried, husked, and packed in sacks, then transported to the processing center. Only 20% of the fallen fruit is picked for production; the rest feeds the wild ecosystem to grow new trees.

Step 4: First Grind

The cleaned shea nuts are crushed into small pieces. While traditionally done by hand with a mortar and pestle, we now use grinding mills to speed up the process and reduce the physical toll on workers.

Step 5: Roasting

The crushed shea nuts are gently roasted over a fire at a specified burning rate to prepare them to release the oils and fats that eventually turn into shea butter.

Step 6: Milling The Roasted Kernels

The milling process is truly amazing! The roasted kernels are cooled and transferred to the milling machine to make a fine paste, releasing viscous oils.

Step 7: Kneading and Churning

Small amounts of cold water are added to the paste while kneading to get a smooth texture. The kneading becomes vigorous to aerate the fat. Once soft and fluffy, large amounts of cold water are added, causing the oily layer (the early stage butter) to rise and be skimmed off.

Step 8: First and Second Stage Boiling

The collected fats are boiled immediately after kneading to separate the fat from the cake. The fats are then transferred to a new pot and boiled on a gentle fire to dehydrate.

Step 9: Filtration and Solidification

The warm liquid fat is filtered through a microfilm. It is then stirred with a wooden ladle into a smooth, uniform texture as it solidifies, stored away from direct sunlight.

Step 10: Packing and Shipment

Solidified Shea Butter is carefully inspected, weighed, and packed in waterproof, air-tight containers, ready to be dispatched to our warehouse in India and around the world.

What You Need to Know About Shea Butter Colours

The colour of shea butter can range from greyish white to buttery yellow. The properties of the Shea butter are not affected by its coloration.

Why does the colour vary?

  • Soil: The mineral content of the soil where the tree grows.
  • Season: Kernels from early shea fruit tend to produce more yellowish butter than late-season crops.
  • Climate: Rain, drought, and heat during the year seeds are produced.
  • Age: Age can turn shea butter very white, often accompanied by a rancid smell (which we strictly avoid).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do you manage Shea butter quality?

We use a quality control system combining traditional practices with modern interventions (like straining melted oil). We adhere to strict SOPs, use dedicated processing areas, inspect every carton during packing, and have our shipments tested by the Ghana Standards Authority. COA (Certificate of Analysis) available on request.
  • Is your Shea Butter Vegan?

Yes, Shea Butter is naturally vegan.
  • Are your products edible?

Our Shea Butter is exported as a cosmetic product. While it is the same butter used for cooking in local communities, we sell it strictly for external use/cosmetics, not as food.
  • Do you test on animals?

We never test on animals. We only use it on pets to heal sore paws or skin conditions—never for testing, always for healing.
  • Does your Shea Butter have a scent?

Yes. Unless chemically de-scented, unrefined Shea Butter has a slight earthy smoky smell from the roasting fires.
  • What is the shelf life?

While it can last up to 5 years in ideal conditions, we state a shelf life of two years to ensure "Best Before" quality.
  • Why is my Shea butter not pure white?

Snow-white butter is usually refined. Magnum Shea butter is pure and unrefined, so the colour naturally varies from buttery yellow to ivory/off-white.
